Obligatory equipment for hiking on the trails of the Teide stratovolcano
Requirements for your safety.

Hiking the high-mountain trails of the Teide National Park – such as PNT 07 Montaña Blanca – La Rambleta, PNT 09 Teide – Pico Viejo – Narices del Teide Viewpoint, PNT 23 Los Regatones Negros or PNT 28 Chafarí – requires more than a simple reservation.
These trails traverse some of the most extreme volcanic landscapes of the archipelago, at high altitudes and with rapidly changing weather conditions. It is essential that you are well prepared and have the right gear.
What should you take with you?
The regulations are clear: without the required equipment you may be refused access to these trails, even if you have a valid reservation.
Here is a list of the basic gear you must take with you:
-
Appropriate high-mountain clothing
• Long trousers (worn or in your backpack)
• Fleece or equivalent (even in summer)
• Hat and gloves in winter.
Weather conditions at high elevations on Mt Teide can change suddenly. Low temperatures, strong winds and extreme exposure to the sun are common, even on seemingly calm days.
-
Specific mountain footwear
Trekking boots or shoes with good grip and ankle support are mandatory. The trails run over loose and uneven volcanic terrain, where a stumble can have serious consequences. -
Hydration and energy
You must carry enough water or hydrating liquids with you, as altitude and physical exertion accelerate dehydration. We also recommend that you take some energy snacks with you. - Safety and communication tools
- Charged mobile phone.
- Torch or headlamp with spare batteries.
- Emergency thermal blanket.
In case of emergency or delays, these will ensure that you can call for help or safely complete the trail after dark.
Additional recommendations
- Use sun protection (sunglasses, sunscreen and hat), even on cloudy days.
- Check the weather forecast and the trail status on Tenerife ON before your hike.
- Avoid the route if you have heart, respiratory or mobility issues. These are high-difficulty trails and some reach over 3,000 metres in elevation.
- Respect the signage, stay on the marked paths and do not disturb or collect any natural features
