Mandatory Equipment for Hiking on the Trails of the Teide Stratovolcano
It’s a mandatory requirement to ensure your safety.

Hiking the high-mountain trails of Teide National Park — such as PNT 07 Montaña Blanca – La Rambleta, PNT 09 Teide – Pico Viejo – Mirador de las Narices del Teide, PNT 23 Los Regatones Negros, or PNT 28 Chafarí — requires more than just a reservation. These trails cross one of the most extreme volcanic landscapes in the archipelago, at high altitudes and under rapidly changing weather conditions. Adequate preparation and the right gear are essential.
What should you bring?
Regulations are clear: access to these trails may be denied without the required equipment, even if you have a valid reservation. Here’s the minimum you must carry:
-
Proper clothing for high mountain
• Long trousers (worn or in your backpack)
• Fleece jacket or equivalent (even in summer)
• In winter: hat and gloves
Weather conditions at high elevations on Teide can change suddenly. Low temperatures, strong winds, and extreme sun exposure are common — even on seemingly calm days.
-
Mountain-specific footwear
Trekking boots or shoes with good grip and ankle support are mandatory. The trail runs across loose, uneven volcanic terrain where a misstep can have serious consequences. -
Hydration and energy
Carrying enough water or hydrating fluids is mandatory. The altitude and physical effort increase dehydration, so bringing some high-energy food is also recommended. -
Safety and communication tools
• Mobile phone with sufficient battery
• Flashlight or headlamp with spare batteries
In case of emergency or delay, these are essential for calling for help or safely completing the trail after dark.
Additional recommendations
- Use sun protection (sunglasses, sunscreen, and a cap), even on cloudy days.
- Check the weather forecast and the trail status on the Tenerife ON platform before your hike.
- Avoid this route if you have heart, respiratory, or mobility issues. These are high-difficulty trails, some reaching over 3,000 meters in elevation.
- Respect signage, stay on the marked path, and do not collect or disturb natural elements.
Reservation conditions
Remember that your permit is valid only for the trail, date, and time slot indicated. You must carry it with you, either on paper or digitally, along with your ID or passport.
Also, if you wish to access the Teide crater (Trail PNT 10 – Telesforo Bravo), you must request an additional permit from the Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition via: reservasparquesnacionales.es
